Show & Tell is a celebration of the power of writing and storytelling. This 90-minute literary cabaret is a showcase of stories across mediums from a variety of storytellers at Portland's historic State Theatre.

Show & Tell attracted over 1,100 guests in its inaugural year last year and it is now our primary fundraiser in support of our free writing programs for Maine youth. We believe it represents our innovative, creative approach and reflects our belief in the power of story.

The State Theatre is a 1,300 seat music hall in downtown Portland that regularly hosts national musical acts and comedy shows.

This year’s fabulous lineup:

Kaveh Akbar | Poet

Dolen Perkins-Valdez | Novelist

Alexandra Styron | Author

Gracia Bareti | Student Author

Hosted by Steve Almond | Writer, Podcaster, Troublemaker

The Telling Room's mission is to empower youth through writing and share their voices with the world.

Focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, we seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for our students. We believe that the power of creative expression can change our communities and prepare our youth for future success. We offer a wide variety of free creative writing programs to Maine youth at our Writing Center downtown and at schools and community based organizations all over the state. Write. Share. Inspire.

What to Wear

Approach Show & Tell as a casual "night out at the theater." Feel free to come as you are, dress for cocktails, or go all out. We know Portland appreciates the opportunity to get fancy, but please know it's not required. We're up for anything!

The State Theatre is a historic theater located at 609 Congress Street in downtown Portland, Maine, which features a combination of Moorish and Art Deco architecture. It reopened as a 1,300-seat performing arts venue in 2010.
